Star-gazing Nights

When

Sunday, June 11, 2023

03:00 - 05:030 a.m.

Where

Meeting place: parking in Strada Castellaro Cavriana 1

We will wait for you before dawn for an awakening accompanied by stars, music, and archeology. We will accompany you along a guided walk in the nature reserve of the Parco del Mincio [Park of the River Mincio] by torchlight, with the night sounds, to the star-gazing site. Here the Circolo Astrofili Veronesi will entertain you with telescope observations of planets and the Moon, until sunrise, with the music of cello and gong. Finally, we walk back listening to the reports of the archaeological diggings at the oasis.

All participants will be offered a sweet and savoury breakfast at the end of the event.

We will meet at 03:30 a.m. at the parking in Strada Castellaro Cavriana 1. We will come back at about 5:30 a.m. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

Sense involved

The "Circolo Astrofili Veronesi" [Association of Amateur Astronomers in Verona] was established in the 1950es by a group of a dozen active amateur astronomers, such as Carlo Recla. They were mainly telescope manufacturers. This group had the honour of publishing and editing the “Bollettino Astronomico Triveneto”, a publication which, in the norther region of Triveneto, was placed alongside the well-known astronomical magazine of that time, namely: Coelum (the complete collection of this review is kept in the library of our Association). This group only lasted from 1954 to 1958, then broke up.

In the following years, a few groups were formed, which left very few traces.  It is known that, at the Museum of Natural History, in the late 1960es and early 1970es, the "Società Astronomica Veronese" [Astronomical Society of Verona] was established and chaired by R. Toledano. In the 1970es (approximately 1973), the  not strictly scientific "X4" group was established (“X4” stands for 4 branches of occult science: i.e. Astronomy, Parapsychology and Ufology). On the other hand, the "Mario Spada" group was constituted by amateur astronomers who met "in the shadow" of the well-known telescope manufacturer from Verona.
