Sundials and solar clocks are the oldest instruments made by men to satisfy one of their greatest dreams, namely measure time in the attempt to dominate it. The time of these instruments is not the artificial time punctuated by the perfect, but cold mechanism invented by man, but rather the True Time connected to the Sun, basic principle of life, the only element which really rules our life.
In a game of lights and shadows, sundials and solar clocks take us back to our roots, and allow us to grasp the natural rhythms of nature, which modern society risks making us forget. Namely, the alternation of darkness and light, sunrise and sunset, noon and the seasons. They are reassuring tools which, with their eloquent silence, invite us to interrupt our daily race, so that we stop with ourselves and reflect on “our” Time.
Sens involved
Paolo Moratello, who obtained a degree in Biology and taught Chemistry and Physics at the higher education institute “Leonardo da Vinci” in Cerea, is engaged in gnomonics, the discipline concerning, art, history and technique of time measurement. Over and beyond various outreach activities in schools and institutes, he planned, realized and recovered several sundials and solar clocks in villas, private homes, public facilities and squares, in collaboration with qualified artistic studies and the favourable opinion of the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, where applicable. He is a member of the CGI - Italian Gnomonic Coordination. He follows their initiatives, and takes part to their meetings. Among the most valuable works, the following are mentioned: the large analemmatic sundial on the square of the Town Hall of Bergantino (RO), the recovery of the sundial with French and Babylonian hours in Orti di Spagna, Verona, and above all the rare lunar meridian in San Cesario on the river Panaro (MO). As for his publications, as author or co-author, we can mention: “Il Tempo del Sole (The Sun Time)”, Grafiche Stella, July 2006; “Torretta - la Chiesa sulla strada (Torretta - The Church on the Road)”, Grafiche Stella, aprile 2007, “Il tempo la memoria gli uomini”(Time and the Memory of Men”), La Grafica, aprile 2008, a book which retraces some itineraries near Verona, looking for sundials and local legends.
