Outside the Earth’s atmosphere, because of the vacuum, the sound cannot travel. And yet, the soundtracks of hundreds of movies set in space transmit the emotional charge of an adventure in the unknown. Tonight we will talk with Mirco Mencacci, sound designer for the cinema, and the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and play with them about the sound tracks of some space-themed films.

Fondazione cineteca di Bologna is a foundation  for film culture, which includes a Fim Archive, a laboratory for the restoration of motion picture films L’Immagine Ritrovata, a rich, scientific publishing activity, the Renzo Renzi Library with the archives of films by Pasolini, Chaplin, and Mastroianni, and many other collections.

Mirco Mencacci is a sound designer, dealing with sound for film, video art and music. He has been a sound designer for films presented at hundreds of film festivals around the world, also screened at the Guggenheim NYC, MOMA NYC, Pompidou Paris, MAXXI Rome Museum, the Venice Biennale. He has also created and collaborated on more than 400 films, TV series, documentaries, short films and soundtracks in the cinematographic, television and home video fields with directors such as Nanni Moretti, Marco Tullio Giordana, Vittorio de Seta, Ferzan Ozpetek and carried out sound restorations such as that of record material from 1939 for the film Fascisti su Marte by Corrado Guzzanti. Since 1981 he has also been the founder and artistic director of the S.A.M. Recording Studios in Lari (PI): film recording and post-production studio, record label, music, book and video editions.

He has held conferences, seminars and masters on sound in cinema in Europe and overseas at educational institutes, universities, film festivals, including Syracuse University (USA) and CPM (Milan).
